Our Philosophy

Taste and Texture/Slow Grown
The average age of a white-feathered broiler in the U.S. is 42 days. After 50 days the white-feathered broiler begins to die from heart attacks because heart and lung capacity cannot keep up with growth rate. No matter what’s in your feed, a 42 day-old broiler is too young to develop taste or texture. The birds with the most taste are old stewing hens but they are also tough. Age equals taste!

We believe a chicken must be at least ten weeks old before it has the time to develop the taste and texture that nature intended. Our birds taste like chicken, not the sauce you put on the chicken. The meat texture is firm with a good bite, not unappealing mush. For maximum satisfaction, we recommend slaughter by fourteen weeks of age. Beyond 14 weeks meat texture becomes tough as the birds pass through puberty.

Maybe it’s a reflection of Southern lifestyle, but our chickens are bred to be slow grown for ideal taste and texture between ten and fourteen weeks of age.
